San Clemente remembers 9/11

San Clemente held its own memorial ceremony yesterday for the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Nearly 100 people attended the ceremony at Semper Fi Park. The beautiful knoll with its spectacular ocean views was an ideal locale for the city’s tribute to those who died in the attacks on New York and Washington and in the skies above Pennsylvania.

Marines, soldiers, and sailors were all represented as bagpipes played and then a moment of silence was observed.

See the slideshow at San Clemente Patch.

In other parts of town, a small crowd was gathered at the American flag at Poche’s and S.C. Rider Supply held a 9/11 Benefit Bike Wash.

See another slideshow of San Clemente observances at the Register.

Also around the county were a 5K Walkathon in Irvine, a Day of Remembrance in Tustin, and the dedication of a new monument called Semper Momento at Heisler Park in Laguna Beach — among many observances.

Never forget.

Pipeline to a Cure in Huntington Beach benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

This Saturday, August 6, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will hold its 4th annual Pipeline to a Cure Gala. This major fund-raising will be at the Hyatt Regency in Huntington Beach and feature a mix of surf greats, recordings artists, and others contributing to the gala.

Greenday's Billy Joe Armstrong was at last year's gala and will be there this Saturday, too.

Greenday's Billy Joe Armstrong was at last year's gala and will be there this Saturday, too.

From the official website:

Guests will enjoy an evening of celebrity entertainment, fabulous food, and spectacular silent and live auctions, all while mingling with their favorite surfing celebrities.

This summer gala will be recognizing the positive effect that surfing has on the health of children with cystic fibrosis.

Surf legends Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama have been the honorary co-chairmen since the event began in 2008 and will continue in those roles this year. Matt Beacham from Fuel TV, himself a pro surfer, will co-host the evening along with Shawn Parr.

The surf connection is explained atTransworld Surf:

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

A few years ago, Australian researchers found that cystic fibrosis children who surfed had significantly healthier lungs. Doctors determined that inhaling saltwater mist has a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs, which allows cystic fibrosis patients to more easily eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus. This discovery led researchers to develop a hypertonic saline solution, which cystic fibrosis patients around the world now inhale every day. In essence, cystic fibrosis patients now mimic a “surf session” on a daily basis. These efforts inspired the Pipeline to a Cure campaign that includes surf and stand-up paddle events for CF families and the August 6th gala.

For more information, visit the Pipeline to a Cure website, their Facebook page, Transworld Surf magazine, and this article by Sherri Cruz at the Orange County Business Journal.

Also, be sure to visit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to learn more about this disease.

Happy Fourth of July

We have been on a short break from blogging (and tweeting and facebooking) due to an increased work load and the need to detach from social media now and then. But today is a good day to reconnect briefly to wish everyone a great Independence Day celebration!

Fourth of July fireworks

If you don’t already have plans to view some fireworks displays tonight, then there may be something wrong with you! But see here for a list of Orange County safe and legal municipal shows as gathered by the San Clemente Patch.

Here in San Clemente, the best spot to view fireworks off the pier may be from the bluffs over the beach in the northwestern part of the State Park campgrounds. If it is clear enough, you can see shows not only in SC but also Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano. And for Marines and their families, you can watch from the Marine Monument, painted here by client and friend Paul Gavin.

Wherever in this great country you are today, enjoy the day and remember why we celebrate it.

And I close with a shoutout to my friend Chase of Electric Panda Music who is on his first visit to OC this weekend and probably burning his blindingly white Brooklyn bum somewhere among the revelers!

Laguna museum celebrates ‘Noguchi: California Legacy’

If you have never visited Isamu Noguchi’s public art/public park/sculpture garden installation in the heart of Costa Mesa, then you have missed one of Orange County’s treasures. Hidden away (but very accessible) among the high rises and freeways of the city, California Scenario — also known as the Noguchi Museum — is as calming and inspiring as a Japanese tea garden. The park is located adjacent to South Coast Plaza and depicts various landscapes of California. It is a pleasure to behold both during the day and at night when special lighting enhances the experience.

Now (and through October) the Laguna Art Museum honors both the California Scenario and other works by the Southern California artist with the exhibit: ‘Noguchi: California Legacy.’ The exhibit features both photos of the construction and completed sculpture garden as well as other works by Noguchi. Born here, the artist has spent much of his life in his native Japan and in New York. But he was convinced by Costa Mesa developer Henry Segerstrom to develop this unique space set in the middle of downtown Orange county. The sculpture park was completed in 1980 and has been one of OC’s hidden gems ever since.

Over the course of a few years, I often used to meet my mother for lunch somewhere in Costa Mesa with our eventual destination being Noguchi’s installation. It was and remains a beautiful location for strolling, sitting, contemplating, meditating.

Thanks to the Laguna Museum exhibition, we can get a closer look at this very wonderful place.

Richard Chang in the OC Register writes:

This exhibition provides narrative and context for his Southern California work, especially “California Scenario,” which remains one of Orange County’s best and most accessible public artworks.

Over the course of two years, Noguchi and his staff worked hard to create an abstract, metaphorical representation of California’s natural resources. Noguchi used natural materials – trees, plants, stones, sand and steel – to create six main sections, each one symbolizing an aspect of California’s diverse environment: desert, forest, mountain, river, agriculture and urban.

The titles Noguchi designated for these sections reflect Noguchi’s interests and goals: “Land Use,” “The Desert Land,” “The Forest Walk,” “Energy Fountain,” “Water Use” and “Water Source.”

The exhibit continues at the museum through October 2 and while it is not a complete catalog of Noguchi’s work, it is a fine way to begin to know the artist who created the beautiful California Scenario.

The Friendship Shelter provides secure temporary housing for the homeless while helping them develop strategies for rebuilding their lives and becoming self-sufficient. ‘Stories of Home’ is a multimedia presentation that focuses on these very issues. This week’s event follows a successful staging of ‘Stories of Home’ last year.

This year’s performance adds new elements: a variety of actors, some from the local scene, plus displays of art pieces created by members of the Artists’ Collective, a small group of professional artists who are current or past residents of Friendship Shelter, and whose talents are being nurtured by the organization.

The Laguna Beach Indy article features Laguna Police community outreach officer Jason Farris whose participation on stage for this event corresponds to his work reaching out to and assisting area homeless.

Except for a recent six-month absence to complete training, Farris has served for several years as the city’s point man on the issue even as the city wrestled to create a temporary overnight shelter after its policies were challenged in court. Farris, who has built bonds and respect among people in a post others might run from, recently earned the American Legion’s recognition as the county’s community service officer of the year, as well as garnering him state-level recognition for the same.

Miller knew Farris through his close work with the Friendship Shelter. The officer readily agreed to join the fundraiser line-up, where he will read a story about 9/11. He’s a veteran of public speaking and practiced at telling stories to his four children.

The event will be held this Thursday, June 16, at Laguna’s [seven degrees]. It begins with cocktails at 6 p.m., performances at 7:30 p.m., and a panel discussion at 8:45 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person. For info call 949-494-6928 or visit Friendship Shelter.
